Our History

In the early 1930s, the City Point section of New Haven was a quiet residential neighborhood, heavily populated by Irish immigrants. Interstate 95, which now bisects this part of the city, did not exist and the water of Long Island Sound engulfed most of the area now known as Long Wharf.

On a clear summer night, you could stand on the oyster docks and gaze across the harbor to see the sparkling lights of Savin Rock Amusement Park reflecting on the water. It was in this section of New Haven, in the fall of 1931, that Erwin S. Tracey established Tracey's Range Oil, the forerunner of Tracey & Son, Ltd. The company grew steadily throughout the thirties and forties, with "Erv" building a reputation for dependability and honesty among his clientele of friends and neighbors.

In September 1945, his son Robert returned from his European tour of duty with the Army Air Corps and joined his father in the business; together they built a small office in the basement of their home. Robert became the main delivery man and the company was renamed Tracey & Son. The following year St. Peter's Church became their first #2 fuel oil customer -- and remained a loyal customer until the parish closed in 1997.

In 1967, Robert relocated the business to its current Howard Avenue address where he continued to serve his loyal customers. In 1987, Robert's daughter Jennifer, and her husband Ralph, became the third generation to be directly involved in the family business. In 1989, Robert's son Christopher joined the company as head of marketing and sales.

Tracey Energy Services, LLC was formed in 1997 by Jennifer and Ralph. It is a landmark business in the history of City Point -- and the Tracey family remains committed to its tradition of "dependable service and commitment to our customers."
