The Top 5 Energy Savings Tips for Under $150
|
- Get in Tune.
Have your equipment cleaned and tuned up regularly. An energy-efficient
system can save up to 10% in fuel costs each year.
- Be a Draft Dodger.
Lower your heating bills by as much as 20% by caulking or
weather-stripping problems areas: windows, doors, entryways for pipes
and wires, chimney/siding joints, wall/foundation joints, around dryer
vents and fan covers.
Hint: A candle's flame will dance in a draft; use one to check these areas.
- Catch the Fireplace Thief.
A fire in a fireplace draws warm air from the rest of the house and
sends it up the chimney. Close all doors and warm air ducts when
entering the room with the fireplace. Open a window near the fireplace
1/2" to 1" to supply air to the fire. Lower the thermostat so
the furnace doesn't kick on when the heat is drawn from the house.
- Use Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucet Aerators.
Available at most hardware stores, these items are inexpensive, easy to
install and can cut your hot water fuel bill by up to 40%.
- Clock It.
A clock ("setback") thermostat can turn down the heat while
you're asleep or away from home during the day, and turn it up
automatically when you wake up or return. Savings? Up to 15% of your
annual heating bill!
