What To Do If Your Heating System Isn’t Working

- 12:17 pm - November 24th, 2025

Oh, no! You wake up in the middle of the night, your fingers and toes feeling like icicles. You check the thermostat. “The temperature shouldn’t be THAT low,” you tell yourself. You check the radiators. Nope, no heat! You finally check your heating system and … Tracey, we have a problem!

But before you call us for “no heat” emergency service, here’s what you can do on your own first:

  1. If you have an oil burning system, make sure there is oil in your tank.

  2. Confirm that your emergency switch is on (don’t forget, you may have two).

  3. Verify that the circuit breaker for your system hasn’t tripped.

  4. If you have a programmable thermostat, make sure it’s working properly and there’s not an issue with the app (note: Your service plan doesn’t cover thermostats).

  5. Make sure your thermostat is in “heat” mode.

  6. Check the batteries in your thermostat, and finally,

  7. Push the “reset” button (one time only).
