A Great Way to Save Energy This Summer

You change your clothes. You change your mind. But do you ever change your air conditioning filter?

If you want to feel as cool as possible this summer while also saving energy and money, it’s time to change or clean your A/C filter.

  • Why should I change or clean my A/C filter?
Changing or cleaning your AC filter is essential to maintain proper airflow, protect your HVAC equipment from damage, and lower your energy bills. A clean filter ensures your system operates efficiently and prevents costly repairs down the road.

  • You said “change or clean” ... which one should I do?
Change your AC filter if it is a disposable, fiberglass, or pleated type. Clean your filter only if it is a manufacturer-approved reusable/washable filter.

  • How often should I change or clean my air conditioner filter?
Most standard disposable filters need to be changed every one to three months. Replace them sooner if you see a thick layer of dust or debris caked on the material; the filter material appears gray; you live with pets or suffer from allergies (change every 30 to 60 days); or you notice weak airflow from your vents or a spike in your monthly utility bills.

If your system uses a hard-frame, washable filter, you should clean it once a month. Remove the filter and vacuum off the loose debris. Wash it with gentle soap and warm water (or a mild white vinegar solution), then rinse it thoroughly. Then allow the filter to air dry completely before putting it back into the unit, to avoid mold and mildew.
